Swanwick School & Sports College
Special Needs Student Ski Trip to Samoëns France – 2019

We recently received the letter below from Alan Kealy following our support of Swanwick School on their Skiing trip.

Dear Skiers Trust,

Alan Kealy at STGB Reception – October 2019

Please accept our heartfelt appreciation for your kind donation towards the SSSC skiing trip in 2019. Your donation has had a huge impact on our residential this year and is integral to us being able to facilitate this opportunity. As a school that caters for children with a range of additional needs, we pride ourselves on giving our pupils a high quality education that includes opportunities to experience activities they would previously normally be able to access. It is thanks to your support that winter sports can be part of our educational offer.

Without your support our residential would not have been able to take place, as the cost of subsidising each pupil was too great. Your kind donation was used to directly pay for tuition of our children with Ecole de ski ZigZag, who specialise in teaching children with additional needs. This resulted in our children not only learning how to ski, but gain their first experience of off piste skiing. It also enabled our year 11 pupils to use skiing as part of their GCSE PE moderation/grades both of which are unheard of in SEN education.

This year 11 pupils from SSSC spent the week in Samoëns, France. Samoëns has been our base for the last 10 years as it enables us to access our own private chalet in a quiet village that is in within 1 hours travel time of Geneva. All of which is conducive to an effective trip for our pupils and their wide ranging individual needs. The pupils this year ranged from 11 – 16 years old and had diagnosis of ASD, MLD and SEMH.

Whilst the week was focused on skiing and developing the skills associated with this, our pupils also showed fantastic improvement in the life skills essential to be successful in their lives outside of and after education.

Alan Kealy Presentation explaining the Benefits of the Ski Trip

This included

  • Increased self esteem
  • Increased self confidence
  • Increased resilience
  • Independence
  • Being a global citizen
  • Increased social skills
  • Opportunities to apply life skills

As always it was an action packed week with over 17.5 hours of skiing for our pupils and they loved every minute of it, especially the hot chocolate after a days skiing on the cold slopes! These pupils now have life long memories of what, as always was a fantastic opportunity.
