On 3rd October the Skiers Trust held a networking reception kindly sponsored by Rathbone Investment Management in their offices in the City of London. The event was very well attended by 80 Members and Friends including representatives from many skiing organisations. A formal welcome was made by Peter Lowe a Director of Rathbones and Trustee of the Skier Trust. There were three inspirational speakers, each of whom gave a short presentation in the areas of their snowsports expertise and interest.
The first guest speaker was Louis Hatchwell a member of the Telemarking ‘A’ Squad, who gave an inspirational account of his Telemarking experience as a self-supported athlete and how the Skiers Trust enabled him to realise his dream to ski for TeamGB.
The next speaker was Alan Kealy, who is the co-headmaster of Swanwick School & Sports College in Derbyshire; he gave a truly inspirational presentation about the Swanwick ski trips to Samoens in France from 2008 to present day. All his disadvantaged students suffer from either single or multiple mental disabilities and these trips have helped to transform their lives.
Finally, John Clark the head coach of GB Snowsports (Paralympics) closed the presentations with some specular videos of his para- skiers, mentioning the importance of funding amateur disabled athletes so that they can follow their ambitions to compete internationally.
During the evening we launched ‘Friends of the Skiers Trust’ and we were pleased with the positive response this initiative has received since the event. If you wish to become a Friend, (please click here to fill an Application Form). Becoming a Friend helps to financially support the vital work that the Skiers Trust does and hopes to continue in the future, by awarding grants to deserving applicants who meet the Trust objectives.
These objectives are:
- the advancement of amateur snowsports,
- the advancement of education & development in snowsports,
- the advancement of wellbeing & mental health through snowsports.
The Trustees wish to sincerely thank Rathbones and our guests who attended the reception and also those who have kindly made donations and became a Friend of the Skiers Trust.
